Question 1

How can I improve the efficiency of my AC?

Accepted Answer

There are several simple ways to help your air conditioner run more efficiently: change your air filter every 1–3 months, keep vents and registers open and unobstructed, schedule annual HVAC maintenance, seal air leaks around doors and windows, use a programmable or smart thermostat, keep your outdoor unit free of debris, grass, and leaves, use ceiling fans to improve air circulation, and keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day. Improving efficiency can lower energy bills, increase comfort, and extend the life of your system.

Question 2

How often should I change my air filter?

Accepted Answer

Most homeowners should replace their air filter every 1–3 months. Homes with pets, allergies, or higher dust levels may need more frequent replacements. A clean filter improves airflow, efficiency, and indoor air quality.

Question 3

What temperature should I set my thermostat in summer?

Accepted Answer

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F when you're home for the best balance between comfort and energy savings. Raising the temperature a few degrees when you're away can further reduce energy costs.

Question 4

How do I know if my AC system is frozen?

Accepted Answer

Signs your system may be frozen include: warm air coming from your vents, reduced airflow throughout your home, ice buildup on the indoor evaporator coil or refrigerant lines, water leaking around the indoor unit when the ice begins to melt, and unusual hissing or bubbling sounds. If you suspect your AC is frozen, turn the system off and switch the fan to "ON" to help thaw the ice, then contact a professional HVAC technician to determine the cause.

Question 5

Is the air blowing out from my outdoor AC unit supposed to be hot?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The outdoor unit's job is to remove heat from your home and release it outside. As a result, the air blowing from the top of your outdoor condenser unit will feel warm or even hot — this is a sign your air conditioner is working properly. However, if the outdoor unit is extremely hot, making unusual noises, or your home isn't cooling effectively, it may be time for a professional inspection.

Question 6

Why is my AC running but not cooling my home?

Accepted Answer

Several issues can cause this problem, including dirty air filters, low refrigerant levels, frozen evaporator coils, thermostat issues, dirty condenser coils, or electrical component failures. If changing the filter doesn't solve the issue, it's best to have a professional diagnose the system.

Question 7

What is a heat pump, and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump is an energy-efficient system that provides both heating and cooling. It moves heat rather than generating it, making it an excellent option for year-round comfort and lower utility costs.

Question 8

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Accepted Answer

Common causes include incorrect thermostat settings, dirty air filters, pilot light or ignition issues, overheating safety shutoffs, or problems with the gas supply. If the issue persists, contact an HVAC technician for service.

Question 10

How long should an HVAC system last?

Accepted Answer

On average: air conditioners last 10–15 years, furnaces last 15–20 years, and heat pumps last 10–15 years. Regular maintenance can help maximize the lifespan of your equipment.

Question 11

When should I replace my HVAC system instead of repairing it?

Accepted Answer

You may want to consider replacement if your system is over 10–15 years old, repairs are becoming frequent, energy bills are increasing, your home is uncomfortable despite repairs, or repair costs exceed 50% of replacement costs. A new system can improve efficiency, reliability, and comfort.

Question 12

Do I really need annual HVAC maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Annual maintenance helps improve energy efficiency, prevent costly breakdowns, extend equipment life, maintain manufacturer warranties, and improve indoor comfort. Preventative maintenance often saves homeowners money over the long term.

Question 13

Why is my energy bill suddenly higher?

Accepted Answer

A spike in energy costs may be caused by dirty air filters, aging equipment, refrigerant leaks, lack of maintenance, duct leaks, or thermostat issues. An HVAC inspection can help identify the source of the problem and restore efficiency.

Question 14

Why is my HVAC system making strange noises?

Accepted Answer

Different sounds can indicate different issues: banging suggests loose or broken parts, squealing points to belt or motor problems, clicking may indicate electrical issues, rattling means loose components, and buzzing can signal electrical or refrigerant issues. Unusual noises should be inspected before they lead to larger repairs.
